President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST)

In 2001 Georgia Tech's President Wayne Clough was appointed to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). He is currently a member of the Advanced Energy Technologies subcommittee. The task before us, as President Clough said in the State of the Union, is to develop technologies that will change the way we power our homes, our businesses and our transportation sector. This requires, among other things, a significant investment in basic science research and in programs to train and educate the next generation of innovators and inventors who will find ways for us to further develop and commercialize energy alternatives.

AtlantIC Alliance for BioPower, BioFuels and Biomaterials

Researchers and students at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Imperial College London and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory are working to develop research and educational programs that envisaged the global importance of energy, environmental, and sustainability issues. With world oil demand growing, and supplies dwindling, it is apparent that other types of fuels and technologies are needed to address future energy concerns. It is these challenges that encouraged our multi-institutional consortium — called the AtlantIC Alliance for BioPower, BioFuels and Biomaterials — to meet and develop a common roadmap from which collaborative research plans and educational opportunities can be developed.
